Title: Once Dead, Twice Shy
Author: Kim Harrison
Good if...you want something quick and light
Madison's prom was killer—literally. For some reason she's been targeted by a dark reaper—yeah, that kind of reaper—intent on getting rid of her, body and soul. But before the reaper could finish the job, Madison was able to snag his strange, glowing amulet and get away. Now she's stuck on Earth—dead but not gone. Somehow the amulet gives her the illusion of a body, allowing her to toe the line between life and death. She still doesn't know why the dark reaper is after her, but she's not about to just sit around and let fate take its course. With a little ingenuity, some light-bending, and the help of a light reaper (one of the good guys! Maybe . . . ), her cute crush, and oh yeah, her guardian angel, Madison's ready to take control of her own destiny once and for all, before it takes control of her. Well, if she believed in that stuff.
You know what? Even though I'm only giving this book a 3/5 star rating, I really enjoyed and recommend reading it. It was quick and easy. In a few weeks time I'll probably forget it, but it was entertaining enough to devote a few hours of my life to. PROs: This book is rather fast paced and action packed. I loved Madison as the protagonist. She's likable and unique. And I loved her relationship with all the other characters. They just fit together. CONs: The story line was rather far-fetched. Like Reapers? Dark Reapers? Light Time-Keepers? Dark Time-Keepers? Um? And not one kiss. (Although, there is romance, but I guess I'll have to wait until book 2 for that to blossom.) Overall, the PROs were stronger than the CONs.
I will most definitely be reading the next in the Madison Avery Series: EARLY TO DEATH, EARLY TO RISE which is already out.
